What is Acre?

Acre is the oldest unit to measure land all over the world. It defines a land size of 1 furlong and 4 rods wide. Also included in the imperial units system, it calculates areas for different shapes, including circles, pentagons, and rectangles. Represented as ‘ac’, it expresses any length or of land. For instance, a one-acre piece of land is equivalent to sixteen courts.

Acre is a commonly used SI unit for measuring land dimensions in the US, Canada, South Asia, Jamaica, Germany, and France. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh also use it for this purpose.

History of Acre

The word comes from the Old English word 'cer', meaning open fields. How it came to be used is an interesting story.

In the Middle Ages, one acre of land was equivalent to the area a person could plough single-handedly with a pair of oxen. It refers to a strip of land that is 1 × 1/10 furlong, 40 × 4 rods, or 660 × 66 feet. Gradually, the people started denoting the size of land in acres not exceeding 4,840 square yards.

Furlong and chain were also common units to measure tillable land. People used ox goads to guide livestock when ploughing fields. These instruments were 51/2 yards in length, equal to 16.5 feet.

One chain was around four ox goads in length. Therefore, 1 chain = 4 x 16.5 = 66 ft. One furlong is the distance a pair of oxen could till at a time without any rest or additional help.
