What Is the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (APES)?

India is no doubt the global frontrunner in terms of digital payments. However, it's important to remember that a large part of the population resides in rural areas where traditional banks are often absent.

To bring access to digital banking to these areas, the government has introduced the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS). So what is it, who can use it, and how? Read on to find out.

What Is AEPS?

The Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (APES) is a simple banking service designed for areas with limited banking infrastructure. It allows users to perform basic banking transactions on accounts linked to their 12-digit Aadhaar number.

Transactions are authorised using a fingerprint scanner rather than using PINs or OTPs. This service can be accessed via authorised APES providers who can be local kirana shops and dedicated agents, or via DigitalSeva Kendras and micro-ATMs.

How Does the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System Work?

The process to bank via the AEPS system is as follows:

  1. You visit an AEPS service point or micro-ATM.
  2. You provide your Aadhaar number and select the bank you want to transact from (if you have multiple banks linked to your Aadhaar).
  3. You choose the transaction: balance check, cash withdrawal or transfer.
  4. The transaction is processed instantly.

To access this service, you must have the following:

  1. An Aadhaar number
  2. A bank account linked to said Aadhaar number.
  3. Your biometric data must be registered with UADAI.
  4. Access to an AEPS service point.

Note: While this service was developed and promoted for rural India, AEPS service points are also available across major towns and cities.

What Are the Types of Transactions You Can Perform via AEPs?

AEPS supports several basic banking services that are focused on daily financial needs, like:

  • Cash Deposits and Withdrawals (whose daily limits are set by banks and NPCI guidelines)
  • Balance enquiry and viewing mini statements.
  • Bank-to-bank transfers (provided both accounts have been linked to their respective Aadhaar numbers)

What Are The Benefits Of AEPS?

AEPS offers several practical benefits, such as:

  • Financial inclusion and accessibility: It brings basic banking capabilities to rural and semi-urban areas.
  • Better Security: Transactions are authenticated via biometrics, which are a lot more secure than using PINs and cards that can be hacked or stolen and misused.
  • Convenience and Interoperability: The AEPS system works across banks and gives users the ability to access several bank accounts from an AEPS service point.

What Are AEPS'S Transaction Limits And Charges?

AEPS transactions follow bank-defined limits.

Charge TypeRate/Fee
Cash Withdrawals₹10,000–₹25,000
Balance EnquiryNo charge
Fund Transfer LimitsAs per bank policy

Charges, if any, depend on the bank.
