UPI is now India’s go-to payment method, used for everything from daily purchases to large recurring payments, including paying with QR codes at stores. With new NPCI and RBI updates, one question keeps coming up: “Are there any UPI charges in 2026?”

A few days ago, Mehul tried paying for groceries in Pune and suddenly blanked on his UPI PIN. That same evening, Ananya in Jaipur set up a brand new one after opening her bank account. Simple situations, yet both show how much we rely on that small number without thinking about it.

This is something most of us can relate to: our muscle memory failing us at the worst possible time. Sometimes you end a call instead of answering it, hit Shift + Delete instead of just delete, and lose critical data or files.  

Things could get worse, for instance, when you enter the wrong UPI pin thrice and get your UPI app locked, especially when there is a long queue behind you.

UPI's immense convenience and real-time transaction capability make it the most preferred payment method today. In August 2025, UPI recorded 20 billion transactions worth INR 24.5 lakh crores.

The following scenarios are something you must have experienced or can definitely relate to. The first: you place an order on Zomato or Swiggy, you select UPI to pay, and enter your PIN. The money gets deducted for you, but does not get registered on the app.  

Or, you want to send money to a friend or a family member, but end up sending it to someone else entirely. In both scenarios, the most common reaction anyone has is, "What now?", followed by, "Will I or how can I get my money back?"
